Congress has passed legislation to extend the 2018 Farm Bill until September 30, 2025, narrowly avoiding a government shutdown.

Congress has reached a compromise and voted to approve the American Relief Act, a continuing resolution that includes an extension of the 2018 Farm Bill until September 30, 2025.

What the Farm Bill extension means for the hemp industry

While there is no mention in the American Relief Act that specifically mentions hemp, the extension continues the 2018 Farm Bill language authorizing the USDA's hemp production program, which does not have a sunset date.

Overall, the extension gives Congress, stakeholders, and lobbyists additional time to advocate for updated federal hemp policy in the new year.

“We are really grateful that tonight, in bipartisan fashion with overwhelming majority of votes, we passed the American Relief Act of 2025”

- Speaker Mike Johnson
